it was 2001 that saw a new push to understand muslims. we know them enough to hate them, speaking as a nation, we know enough to fear, but we havent come to the point of acceptance. social change is slow. the gay and lesbian community have put in the work. americas homogenous nature and general keeping to oneself tactics by the asian community have fostered this lack of dialogue and now subsequent fear. its a fear of something people don't understand. they just know it as a threat.
