1. (RC)What ways are Black students pressured to assimilate as students in America?
- master culture & ways of american mainstream

2. (RC)What particulars of being Black are Black students pressured to "give up" as American students?
- styles of speech
- appearences
- value priorities
- preferences

3. (RC)Why might American Blacks find it harder to assimilate than immigrants?
- they've been here since the beginning (of america)
- (yet) they are excluded from defining images of school
- (therefore) essentially it's an insult to American Blacks, because theyre being asked to join into something that's made them invisible as a people in America's history books.

4. (RC)What are some areas Black Americans have influenced the American South? (why shouldn't Black Americans be ignored in American history?)
- housing design
- land use
- religious expression

5. (RC)What has American Society told itself of the origin of it's successes?
- that it's exclusively white and not the sum of it's assimilated immigrant population

6. (RC)What do American educators assume about Black students?
- that they need extra help to overcome inherited cultural weaknesses

7. (RC)How do programs targeting Blacks equate black identity with substandard intellectual status?
- sharing credit for success, but blaming failures on weaknesses that can never be overcome

- grades worsened in the 80's as compared to the 50's

9. (RC)Why is there a difference between grades of Black students in the 1950's and 1980's?
- in the 1980's, Black student's abilities were under suspicion
- ambitions, successes, and failures all distorted

10. (RS)Why are Black students today more racially vulnerable than in the 1950s?
- they are given too much help and taught to feel almost crippled or incapable as an inherent trait.

- schools must focus more on reducing vulnerabilities in students

- the student must feel valued
- the education of Black students should be guilded by the challenge and promise of personal fulfillment, rather than remediation
- racial integration
- black life & culture presented in mainstream curriculum

- without it, the student will never excel

- the student will resist any challenge without being given respect

- draws out group differences

- lack of resources and access to students

- stopping their kids from dropping out
- giving their kids a sense of hope and entitlement to american life and school
